Today’s article will totally focus on “How To Make A Website On WordPress” An easy to understand, step-by-step guide from a WordPress front-end developer.
How To Make A Website
Before you start worrying about themes, color schemes, designs, domain name and web hosting, you have got to decide what platform you’re going to build your website with.
What do I have in mind by “platform”?
Well, back in 2006 when I got started with web development, most of the sites, were constructed using hand-written HTML, CSS, and PHP (code) and even Flash. These codes took a lot of time to get a line and were tricky to master.
That’s why most of the people still think creating a website from scratch without writing any single line of code is too difficult or requires a lot of coding and design skills – but that’s no longer straight! In 2016, content management systems (CMS) like WordPress, Weebly, Drupal & Joomla have made creating a website accessible to everyone with easy front-end changes.
To put simply, a CMS (or website building platform) is a user-friendly platform for making new websites and managing your own online content easily, instead of applying a bunch of loose CSS & HTML pages.
Most Popular CMS (nowadays)
As you can determine from the above graph, nearly half of the websites on the Internet are running on the WordPress (CMS) platform.
Why We Use WordPress?
Because at this stage there are no better/easier option to make a website… But more importantly:
1- It’s FREE of cost, With million’s of themes & layouts:
WordPress doesn’t cost a dime to download or install, and there’s a huge community who has designed beautiful mobile-ready themes, layouts, and templates, making it so easy to get moving fast with it. You’ll never work out of uniqueness…
2- It’s very easy to understand for beginners:
If you just know how to use Microsoft Word, then you should already know how to add your own content. WordPress can be expanded with free plugins to manage just about any site you can imagine. With WordPress “plugins” you will be easily capable of adding contact forms, subscribe us forms, image galleries and so on for your website simply and easily – pretty simple, huh?
3- It’s great for both small as well as large website:
From basic blogs to beautiful business websites and online stores, WordPress can easily manage and handle just about whatever kind of website. WordPress is widely used nowadays, It is used by eBay, Mozilla, Reuters, NASA, and even CNN.
Some other website building / CMS platforms are as:
But, I would like to use WordPress.
1- Joomla: It is similar to WordPress and works great for making new websites too, but you will need at least a small bit of technical coding to make it work the way you want.
2- Drupal: It is similar to WordPress and it is a very powerful platform that is so popular with front-end developers and experienced coders as well.
For beginners, I suggest using WordPress for making great business sites.
It’s the simplest and easiest platform I have ever worked with, but it’s too flexible enough to fit everyone from small business owners, and freelancers to bloggers. I would see no further option better than WordPress.
STEP #2: Find A Domain Name and Webhosting
To make a new WordPress website online, you’re going to need two important things:
- Web Hosting: (a place where you can store your site files & also a service that connects your website to the internet)
- A domain name: (an address like yoursite.com, i-e, wewordpress.com)
The WordPress platform itself is free, but a domain name and hosting will cost you approximately $2 – $5 per month. It’s your choice, but I would recommend you choose an extra-fast hosting for your new business.
From where I get a domain name and web hosting?
I have mostly used www.hostgator.com as a web hosting and domain registrar for myself and for my other development projects.
Their basic website hosting costs less than a cinema ticket ($2.75/month) and they throw in a free domain name.
What type of domain name should I pick for my site?
If you are planning to setup your own website, then “YourName.com” can be a perfect option for you.
If you are creating a website for your business, your domain name should match your company name. For example “CompanyName.com”.
For this website (WeWordPress), I choose “wewordpress.com”
STEP #3: Let’s Set Up Your Website
Once you have done with your domain name purchasing and completely set up your web hosting as well, you’re great on your way! Now it’s time to get your site up and running. The first thing you will simply need to do is install “WordPress” to your domain name.
Installing WordPress on your domain:
There are two ways to install WordPress, one MUCH easier than the other one.
#1- TO CREATE A WEBSITE WITH WORDPRESS, USE ONE CLICK INSTALLATION:
Almost every reliable and a well-established web hosting company has also integrated 1-click-installation option for WordPress, If you signed up with Hostgator hosting or any other similar hosting company, you should find your “1-click-installation” in your hosting account control panel.
Here are some basics steps you should follow:
- Log in to your hosting account called as Cpanel.
- Go to your control panel (Cpanel).
- Search for the “WordPress” or “Website” icon.
- Choose the domain name where you want to install your website.
- Click the “Install Now” button and you will get access to your new WordPress website.
#2- MANUAL INSTALL:
If for some technical reason or some failure (some hosting companies don’t provide one-click-install for WordPress) you don’t have the choice to install WordPress automatically, look this manual guide below:
1- Download WordPress.
2- Create a new folder on your computer and unzip WordPress in it.
3- Search for a file named wp-config-sample.php and rename it to: wp-config.php
4- Now, the next step is to open the wp-config.php on (notepad++ code editor) and also change the following lines:
define(‘DB_NAME’, ‘database_name_here’); – Writes your Database name here
define(‘DB_USER’, ‘username_here’); – Type your webhosting username here
define(‘DB_PASSWORD’, ‘password_here’); – Type your hosting password
5- Now, You can Log into your hosting FTP (download FileZilla for that). The FTP address is usually ftp.yourdomain.com, username and password are the same that you used to register to your host.
6- If there is any file named called “index.php” – delete it before any further editing. After that upload all the files from your WordPress folder to your FTP server. I hope you can use “drag n drop” function in FileZilla.
7- Once you have completed the previous steps, go to the URL: yourdomain.com/wp-admin/install.php

Congratulations – you’re now ready to set in motion!
If you’ve followed all the above steps I’ve shared in this guide, you should now have a fully-functional WordPress website! That wasn’t so much difficult, was it? I believe you say No.
Last but not least, always keep improving your site.
As I mentioned before, WordPress is highly customizable. If you want to truly master WordPress keep trying new things and also do with changes yourself as well.
